I am passionate about pregnancy and birth. I started Westside Doula in response to my own reaction to birth. For (adorable angelic) child #1, I felt late to the game for everything. As a Los Angeles transplant, I didn't know anyone who was having babies. I didn't even know what I didn't know. All I knew was that, with a city of 10 million, somebody somewhere must be having children... I just didn't know any of them.
I knew that I didn't like Disney or primary colors, but didn't know that there was a philosophy of eco-parenting.
I knew that hospital procedures made me want to pick a fight, but I didn't know why or that home birth was a option.
I knew that I didn't fit in my pants, but all I could find at Target was a bunch of polka-dotted muumuus. Life was very confusing.
For (adorable and also angelic) child #2, I dove into my research and tried to learn everything that I could about labor and delivery.
During my pregnancy, I took classes to become a doula, and as a result Westside Doula was born. As soon as I started telling people that I was becoming a doula, they started telling me their own doula (or lack of doula) stories. I loved them, even those that broke my heart.
Now, I don't want to pick a fight in hospitals, but I understand why I did. I was afraid of being swept up by the "this is the way we always do it" tide and losing my voice in the process. With a doula of my own at my second birth, I felt empowered, even if she said nothing.
Hospitals can be (at the same time) fearful, lifesaving, intimidating, comforting, and confusing. A doula can help bring calm to your birth.
I am more committed then ever to help every woman have the birth that she wants.
Now that you know a little about me, let's meet, and see if I can help you discover the birth that you want.
Are you a doula? I am always looking to expand my network of talented and compassionate doulas that live and service the westside. Please contact me if you would like to get involved.
